Every year HIMSS and its partners host National Health IT Week to catalyze change and bring attention to the efforts of those working to transform healthcare through information technology.

This year’s NHIT Week takes place during a critical period in our healthcare ecosystem as private, public, state, and federal organizations like Amazon and Walgreens place bets on technology and partnerships they believe will transform our industry. In fact, there was more public and private funding invested in healthcare start-ups and technology in 2018 than in any period in US history.

As we celebrate the 2018 NHIT Week, we would like to recognize the efforts of those working to transform healthcare in the US through the use of information and technology. HIMSS recently sat down to interview organizations like Lyft and Walmart to find out more about their efforts to advance areas like population health, genomics, and artificial intelligence.

  • Lyft is investing heavily in the development of healthcare solutions and partnerships that address major social determinate of health like transportation challenges for underserved Medicaid populations: View Interview
  • Businesses like Nebula Genomics are working to help consumers understand issues like consent and risk by giving third-parties access to their health data using a blockchain model: View Interview
  • Earlier this year Dacadoo Americans released a real-time health risk scoring solution built on an open API platform which they hope will ultimately help improve patient behaviors: View Interview
  • In the last year the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT has taken significant steps to advance the use of open APIs to help patient and providers better coordinate their healthcare: View InterviewWalmart is working with neuroscience design firm EngagedIN to make AI algorithms for an app designed to build a “brain taxonomy” that can be used to help individuals understand what motivations impact their food habits: View Interview

Thank you to those who attended our Innovation and Design Thinking in Healthcare event hosted by TN HIMSS yesterday. Look for a recap from that event. We look forward to sharing additional stories and insights on healthcare transformation in the months to come.
