by Eric Thrailkill, TN HIMSS Chapter President

The TN HIMSS Chapter hosted a packed house of members and guests to an invigorating panel discussion in the second of their series “Innovators and Incumbents”.  The event was held during National HIT Week, with all state and local legislators invited to attend.  The Chapter was proud to have Dr. Eric Louie, Chief Medical Officer of Healthbox – A HIMSS Solution, moderate experts who discussed the culture of innovation, design thinking, practical models and success factors.

The event started off with the announcement of a unique relationship for TN HIMSS Board Members, as well as the Ambassadors of TN HIMSS (future leaders’ organization) receiving complimentary membership to The Disruption Lab member community portal and events.  This relationship will enrich the content provided to members with a specific focus on global disruptive innovator research.   In the past two years, The Disruption Lab has hosted executive innovation programs in New York City, Barcelona, Helsinki and Tallinn, Estonia.  In addition, TN HIMSS members are invited to monthly events in Nashville (available also by livestream) with many HIMSS members hosting workshops and participating on panels. If you haven’t signed in to join yet, you can here.

We were fortunate to have Dr. Kevin Johnson, Chief Medical Informatics Officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and TN HIMSS BOD member in the audience.  Dr. Johnson was recognized for his induction into the Nashville Technology Council Hall of Fame – joining two other current/past TN HIMSS BOD members with this unique distinction.

Dr. Eric Louie of Healthbox commenced the main portion of the event with a thoughtful analysis of the impact of “New Kids on the Block” – essentially, discussing the impact of Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Apple and Large/Self-Insured Employers on the health and healthcare ecosystem.  This opening assessment led to a rich panel discussion from the following panelists:

  • Mike Biselli, Founder of CatalystHTI in Denver
  • Tami Wyatt – Associate Professor Research and Co-Director of the Health Information Technology Simulation Lab at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN
  • Ryan Donnelly – Strategy and Growth Officer of Premise Health, the largest onsite/near-site provider of health services at employee locations in over 40 states
  • Chris Carmody – Senior VP of IT and Infrastructure for UPMC in Pittsburgh
  • Vic Gatto – Co-Founder of Briovation, a healthcare venture capital fund with unique relationships curating health system needs with innovative startups

The opportunities to partner, develop a culture of innovation, address the physician/clinician burnout epidemic and to continuously learn, discover and implement solutions while addressing healthcare’s thorniest issues were discussed in detail.

We were proud to host this event during National HIT Week and extremely proud to be the first Chapter to feature leadership from Healthbox – a HIMSS Solution.  Progress for our members and the community of Nashville and the state of Tennessee will me measured through our continuation of this series of events in the future.

The Chapter displayed why our community has such a rich history of health and healthcare services, in celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the formation of HCA Healthcare, by opening the discussion to innovation models of health services delivery outside of our state, in benefit of our Chapter members.
